Escape from Terra volume 1 Lee Oaks

My first (instructed) art discipline was water colors.  I seized this opportunity to paint Mars the old way by hand.

I picked this layout even though it diverts from the established theme.  It captures every story element and provided me with lots of textures and challenges.  The lighting and flames, the smoke, the stars, the animals (yes animals!) and glowing music notes and embers, etc...  See below to see how it turned out.

I like how the fire turned out.  Don't ask me how I did it.  I had it all planned out in my head, then it became much more complex when putting it on paper.
